UK: Cannabis could be reclassified
ITN News
Wednesday 18 Jul 2007 Cannabis may be moved from a Class C to a Class B drug, Prime Minister Gorden Brown has announced to ministers. The Government is to consult on changing the classification of the drug. Cannabis was classified as a class B drug until January 2004 when it was downgraded by former home secretary David Blunkett. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will publish a consultation document next week, reviewing drugs strategies. Mr Brown said: "She will be asking the public to comment on new ways in which we can improve drugs education in the country, give support to people undergoing treatment ... and give support for communities who want to chase out drug dealers." He continued: "As part of the consultation - and the Cabinet discussed this yesterday - the Home Secretary will also consult on whether it is now right that cannabis should be moved from Class C to Class B." The Prime Minister was replying at question time to Labour's Reading West MP, Martin Salter who said a drugs policy was needed which did not "criminalise the sick but tackles the drugs that do the most harm". http://www.itv.com/news/britain_a9cb552fb24a68b578e392ce7993ef59.html
