UK: UK weighs re-classification of cannabis
RTE, Ireland
Wednesday 18 Jul 2007 The British government said today it would consult on raising the classification of cannabis to a controlled Class B drug, putting it back to a level with barbiturates and amphetamines. A Home Office spokesman said the drug's classification would be reviewed 'given the increase in strength of some cannabis strains and their potential harms.' Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Home Secretary Jacqui Smith would consult 'on whether it is now right that cannabis should be moved from Class C to Class B'. Cannabis shares its current classification with controlled substances such as anabolic steroids and anti-depressants. Concern that stronger strains of cannabis known as 'skunk' can induce psychosis has prompted calls for tougher penalties for its sale and use. Three years ago, the UK downgraded cannabis from Class B to Class C. The re-classification meant that possession by adults usually leads to confiscation and an informal warning by police, although they still have the power to arrest repeat offenders or those who smoke in 'public view'. http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0718/cannabis.html
