UK: Tories: Consulting on cannabis is not enough
Conservatives
Wednesday 18 Jul 2007 David Davis has called on the Government to seriously toughen up its stance on illegal drugs after Gordon Brown indicated a Government U-turn over cannabis. Following the Prime Minister's announcement of a consultation on the reclassification of the drug from a Class C to Class A substance, the Shadow Home Secretary said the Government should go further with the introduction of far more effective border controls, plus action on the rehabilitation of drug addicts. In the Commons, Mr Brown told MPs that a consultation exercise would be launched next week as part of a review of the UK's drugs strategy. Commenting, Mr Davis said: "We would welcome the reclassification of cannabis. Drugs are a scourge on society and a major cause of crime which Labour has failed to tackle. "We have long called for the reclassification of cannabis based on the science and evidence available which shows all too clearly the real damage this drug can do to people, especially young people." He declared: It is not enough to simply consult on this - the Government must also secure our porous borders to stop hard drugs flowing into the country, and seriously strengthen drug rehab treatment for those already on drugs."
