UK: Burnham: I smoked pot
Wigan Observer
Friday 20 Jul 2007 A Wigan MP has become the latest to confess to dabbling with drugs in his youth. Andy Burnham, a rising star in the Labour Party, has joined the growing band of top politicians to admitted to smoking cannabis. A Treasury spokesman confirmed that Chief Secretary to the Treasury Mr Burnham, who represents a constituency covering Hindley and Leigh, had tried the drug "once or twice at university" but never since. Chancellor Alistair Darling, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly have also publicly admitted to smoking pot in their youth. Mr Burnham's revelation comes as the Government is considering re-classifying the Class C drug in light of concerns about super-strength cannabis being linked to mental health disorders. But commentators do not think the Leigh MP's confession will damage his career. http://www.wigantoday.net/wigan-news?articleid=3047438
