UK: Harman and Denham join cannabis Cabinet
ITV News
Friday 20 Jul 2007 Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman and Skills Secretary John Denham have joined the growing list of Government ministers to admit smoking cannabis while at university. Seven members of the Cabinet, including Home Secretary Jaqcui Smith and Chancellor Alistair Darling, have confessed to using the drug as students. Ms Harman became the eighth, saying: "I did, when I was at university, smoke cannabis once or twice." She said she had not smoked it since, adding: "I have indulged in the odd glass of wine but not cannabis." Mr Denham is now the ninth Government minister to admit to cannabis use. The Southampton Itchen MP told his local paper he took the drug when a student. Mr Denham was a Home Office minister when the decision was made to reclassify cannabis. The admissions came after Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced a review of the classification of cannabis, which may reverse the 2004 decision to downgrade it from a class B drug to the less serious class C. Mr Brown's spokesman said the Prime Minister - who has denied ever using illicit substances - was "quite relaxed" about his Cabinet colleagues' admissions of past indiscretions. http://www.itv.com/news/index_70d24a691b44f3d448ecfa900ad4799e.html
