Guyana: Fine and community service for treating cold with ganja

Saturday 28 Jul 2007 A man who said that he used the ganja that police found when they searched him to treat his cold was fined and sentenced to two months community service when he appeared at the Wales Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Leroy Albert of North Section, Canal Number Two admitted to a charge of possession of marijuana and was fined $3,000 and sentenced to two months community service by Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton. According to the prosecution's case, last Tuesday at Canal Number Two Albert had in his possession five grammes of cannabis. Police Prosecutor Jacqueline Skinner told the court that police were conducting raids in the area on the said date and they searched the defendant and found the drugs in his pants pocket. He was told of the offence being committed and was arrested and charged.
