UK: Judge's cannabis warning
Mansfield Chad
Thursday 18 Oct 2007 A JUDGE has warned people caught growing cannabis that they will be hit hard after slapping a Mansfield man with a community sentence. Judge Dudley Bennett told Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday that too many cases of cannabis cultivation were coming before the courts. Lee Gallagher (26), of Cromwell Street, was involved in only a small way, with five plants growing in his rear yard. But he was sentenced to 150-hours' unpaid work in the community and was warned he would go to jail if there were any further breaches of the suspended prison sentence he was already subject to. The court was told he had previously been given a 12-month suspended sentence for assaulting his ex-partner and causing her actual bodily harm. On 4th September police officers with a warrant discovered the five cannabis plants growing outside at his home. In mitigation, Michael Evans said Gallagher had a long-term drug addiction and did not want to go back to buying Class A drugs from dealers. Gallagher had already spent 223 days in custody on remand. http://www.chad.co.uk/news/Judges-cannabis-warning.3394180.jp
