UK: Cannabis use falls again

NEW figures show cannabis use is decreasing – putting a question mark
over Government moves to look at strengthening penalties for the drug.

The British Crime Survey revealed today the proportion of 16 to
59-year-olds who admitted using the drug in the previous 12 months fell
for the fourth year in a row to 8.2 per cent.

But there was increased glue sniffing and abuse of amyl nitrite, or
“poppers”.

And for the first time, the survey revealed the number of people abusing
the horse tranquiliser ketamine, also known as “special K” and “tekno”.

The drug is being used by more people than crack cocaine or heroin, with
0.3 per cent admitting to taking it in the previous year.

This figure rose to 0.8 per cent in the 16-24 age group.

Gordon Brown revealed in July that the Government would launch a second
review of the 2004 downgrading of cannabis.

The review had made cannabis a largely non-arrestable offence, but the
PM signalled the possible reintroduction of tougher penalties.
