Iceland: Cannabis Cultivation Increasing in Iceland

Three times the amount of cannabis was confiscated within Iceland last
year than at border control points. Chief of the Capital Region Police
says cannabis cultivation is in rapid growth and predicts hard drugs
will be produced in Iceland in the near future.

According to a recent report undertaken by the National Audit Office on
the illegal import of drugs, almost 50 kilos of cannabis was confiscated
at customs checkpoints in 2003 and about 20 kilos inside Iceland,
Fréttabladid reports.

Three years later it was the other way around. Fifty kilos of cannabis
were confiscated in Iceland, but only about 15 kilos upon arrival to the
country. Import of amphetamine has however increased considerably;
police confiscated 27 times more amphetamine last year than in 2003.

“Production of cannabis is increasing,” said Capital Region Chief of
Police Stefán Eiríksson. “The knowledge of how cannabis is grown has
been spreading among criminals for the past few years.”

Eiríksson said this increase in home-produced cannabis had been
predictable and stated the same will happen with amphetamine and
cocaine. “We have found places where amphetamine has been produced and
believe people are slowly but surely establishing such factories here.”
