Mali: Over 2 tonnes of cannabis seized
Africasia
Wednesday 05 Dec 2007 Malian authorities seized 2.1 tonnes of cannabis in one of the biggest drug busts ever an official in Bamako said Wednesday. Police seized 1,350 kilos (2,975 pounds) of cannabis in Bamako and an additional 850 kilos in Kayes, near the border with Senegal, which came from "the same network," Border Research and Intervention Division chief Abdel Karim Konate told AFP. Konate added that one person had been arrested in a working-class neighbourhood in the Malian capital. "We've outsmarted the network of those who wanted to make Mali a revolving door of narcotraffickers in West Africa," said Konate, who added, "this is one of the biggest drug busts in the history of Mali border police." Last month, the Malian border police seized 35 kilos of "pure cocaine" with a street value of 2.3 million euros (3.4 million dollars) in a town near the Guinean border. http://www.africasia.com/services/news/newsitem.php?area=africa&item=071205204036.hu0sd43u.php
