UK: Young mum growing cannabis is spared jail
Medway Messenger
Monday 18 Feb 2008 A HEAVILY pregnant woman whose Medway home was used to grow cannabis has narrowly escaped a prison sentence. Katie Lamb, 24, was told by Judge Andrew Patience QC he had "just been persuaded" to impose a suspended jail term. He warned Lamb, who is due to give birth to her third child, that he did not like her "attitude" and would not be so lenient if she returned to court for breaching any of the conditions of her sentence. Lamb, who admitted permitting premises to be used for the production of cannabis in November 2006, was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment suspended for two years. Her conditions include two years supervision by the probation service and attending programmes to address alcohol and drug abuse. Maidstone Crown Court heard the cannabis factory was found at her home in Cypress Court, Gillingham, after a 999 call in relation to a domestic incident. There were a total of 193 plants with an estimated value of £27,000. John Fitzgerald, defending, said Lamb had led a "chaotic and self-destructive" lifestyle involving alcohol, drugs and working in "gentlemen's clubs", since the age of 14. He added she "foolishly" agreed to the cannabis factory being set up after just eight weeks with her then boyfriend. http://www.kentonline.co.uk/aroundkent/news.asp?village=16135&article_id=423063
