Court told of cannabis in sock
Derry Journal
Friday 22 Feb 2008 A Derry man who was caught at Bridgend garage with cannabis hidden in his sock, was fined e350 this week. James McNamee of 14 Amelia Road, Shantallow, was brought before Buncrana District Court last Thursday for an offence committed at 2.40am on January 18 last. Garda Thomas O’Connor told the court that when he discovered the drugs after searching the defendant’s car, Mr McNamee told him: “Just that I’ve never been in any bother before. I’m an honest young fella.” Judge Desmond Zaidan, told the defendant, who was representing himself, “Okay young man, what’s an honest young fella doing with 3.5 grammes of cannabis?” McNamee replied “I was totally foolish. It was my first time doing anything like that. It was the first and last time.” Judge Zaidan told him: I’m glad to hear it because if you continue with use of cannabis, it will destroy you.” Garda O’Connor told the court that the accused had immediately admitted ownership of the drugs, with a street value of approximately e40, had fully co-operated and had no previous convictions. Judge Zaidan gave Mr McNamee the option of donating e1,000 to charity and avoiding a conviction. However, the defendant said that he was unemployed. Judge Zaidan gave him a second chance to opt for a donation to charity but, when Mr McNamee declined, convicted and set a fine of e350 to be paid forthwith. http://www.derryjournal.com/journal/Court-told-of-cannabis-in.3804831.jp
