UK: Cannabis man gets 30 months jail
Medway Messenger
Monday 17 Mar 2008 A MAN caught growing cannabis at his Medway home has been jailed for two-and-a-half years. Gary O'Halloran denied cultivating the drug, claiming he had been on holiday in Thailand and did not know the 31 plants were there. Even after the 44-year-old, of Cornwallis Avenue, Gillingham, was convicted after a trial, he still maintained his innocence. Maidstone Crown Court heard police went to his home in March last year and found the plants in a bedroom. Foil had been placed in strategic places to reflect the light and heat. O'Halloran claimed a man had moved in during his absence and maintained he had had nothing to do with the plants. Judge Michael Lawson heard the potential yield if the plants reached full maturity was about 31oz. No figures were available for value. Crispian Cartwright, defending, said O'Halloran could be "falling on his sword" and taking the rap for a family member. The judge said the jury must have been satisfied that O'Halloran was responsible for the cannabis and knew about it before he went away. http://www.kentonline.co.uk/aroundkent/news.asp?village=16135&article_id=427837
