UK: Student Jailed for Drug Dealing on Uni Campus
Welwyn and Hatfield Times
Thursday 20 Mar 2008 A STUDENT caught with cannabis in his university room has been jailed. Mohamed Haji, 19, a first-year student at the University of Hertfordshire, was supplying the drug to others as a small-time dealer. Police recovered scales in his room at the Hatfield-based university and when they examined his mobile phone it was clear he had been receiving text messages from people wanting the drug. Haji appeared at St Albans Crown Court today (Thursday) for sentence. He had earlier been found guilty of possessing 192 grams of cannabis with intent to supply. It was on February 3 last year that police recovered the drugs from his room at the university Haji was studying for a degree in business studies and police also found £110 on him. Passing sentence, Judge Stephen Warner told him it was clear he had been involved in the supply of drugs within the university campus. He said it was a form of commercial dealing and from the text messages recovered by the police it was evident that people had been requesting a "bar" and "half a bar" of the drug. During Haji's trial, the court heard he had using cannabis since he was 15. The judge said the offence was so serious that only a custodial sentence was appropriate. Haji, of Lawrence Avenue, Letchworth, was jailed for four months. http://www.whtimes.co.uk
