Cannabis Conference Attracts Ex-Policeman And Ex-Smuggler
LCA Press Release Wednesday 14 Feb 2001 The Second Annual Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) party conference is to be held at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, on March 17th. Speakers come from a wide range of backgrounds and political opinions, but all are united in their call for the immediate legalisation of cannabis in the UK. Alun Buffry, spokesman and Nominating Officer for the LCA, said: "The different experiences of our speakers, from both sides of the legal fence, illustrates the simple common sense of legalisation." "The law banning cannabis is wrong as it unjustly punishes the people whom it is meant to protect, and prevents research and investment into the many beneficial uses of this versatile and efficacious plant - social, medical, environmental and industrial. Like many an alliance, we may differ in details, but we all agree that society would be far better off once this unnecessarily restrictive law is scrapped." Invitations to speak at the conference have been accepted by: Howard Marks (author and ex-cannabis smuggler); Eddie Ellison (ex-head of Scotland Yard Drugs Squad); Roger Warren-Evans (barrister from 'Liberty'); Caroline Coon co-founder of 'Release'); Alun Buffry (author and nominating officer of the LCA); Ingo Wagenknecht (from the Norfolk Green Party); Lyndon Pugh (editor of CC-News); Steve Pank (treasurer of the Campaign to Legalise Cannabis International Association); and prospective LCA parliamentary candidates Don Barnard, Mark Gibson and Carl Wagner. Topics will include cannabis and the law, human rights, medicine, the environment, politics and fun. Alun Buffry, co-ordinator for the conference, said: "There may be a few surprises to liven up the day. Those who attended last year's conference all said they found the day enjoyable as well as educational. This year it is bigger and better, and will be truly memorable. Although legalisation of cannabis is a very serious issue that should concern every citizen, we will not forget to have fun!" Entry to the conference will be by pre-booked tickets only. Legalise Cannabis Alliance candidates contested the by-elections of Kensington and Chelsea (Colin Paisley, ex-Labour mayor of Carlisle) and Romsey (Derrick Large). There were five candidates in the local elections in Norwich in 1999 and 2000, and one in Peterborough in May 2000 where Marcus Davies received 5.6% of the vote. Howard Marks was the first person to stand for Parliament on a Legalise Cannabis platform in 1997, contesting four seats: Norwich North, Norwich South, Southampton Test and Neath. Mark Gibson is the husband of Lezley who was found not guilty by a Carlisle jury last September after admitting that she used cannabis to ease the suffering of Multiple Sclerosis. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance hopes to field up to 100 candidates at the next General Election.
