Not Guilty verdict returned by Crown Court Jury on MS sufferer LCA LCA Press Release Sunday 19 Mar 2000 The Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) welcomes the Not Guilty verdict returned by an Ipswich Crown Court Jury on MS sufferer Thomas Yates today. Mr Yates had been arrested for the cultivation of more than 40 cannabis plants at his home and guesthouse in Lowestoft, Suffolk, during a police raid searching for a man who had stayed there some years ago. Alun Buffry, Nominating Officer for the LCA, said today: "It is a shame on this Government that they continue to support a law that does far more harm than good, and particularly sad that people like Thomas have to be dragged through the courts for growing and using a plant to ease their pains. "It is time that Tony Blair started to listen to the evidence from a wide range of people who have used cannabis to their benefit. There is no justification for continuing to ban this versatile and efficacious plant - cannabis also called hemp. The application of the Misuse of Drugs Act is a contravention of Human Rights, a misuse of public funds, and morally indefensible." The Legalise Cannabis alliance, an official UK political party since March 1999, will field candidates in the local government elections in the UK, this May, and plan to contest the forthcoming by-election in Romsey. We feel this is necessary because no other UK party has so far been willing to speak up for the Rights of cannabis users, who, sick or hail, find benefit from a plant that can be grown in the garden or in the house. Notes for Editors: Colin Paisley, ex-Labour mayor of Carlisle, stood as the Legalise Cannabis Alliance candidate in the by-election in Kensington and Chelsea last November. He gained 141 votes. The LCA contested 5 seats in the local elections in Norwich in May 1999. Howard Marks was the first legalise cannabis candidate to stand in more than one constituency at the last General Election. The LCA does not run a membership as we feel that our concern is a cross-party issue. LCA Principles, Aims and Proposals have been endorsed by members of the Labour Party, Green Party and Liberal Party. We advocate that cannabis be removed from the Misuse of Drugs Act thereby making it legal to cultivate, supply and use in the many beneficial ways, both for health of the person and the good of the environment
