THE LEGALISE CANNABIS ALLIANCE, a UK political party, is to field candidates in Norwich and Peterborough in this year's local elections.

In Norwich, 5 candidates will contest seats: Sarah Homes (St Stephen Ward), Mick Pryce (Mancroft Ward), Hugh Robertson (Bowthorpe Ward), Tina Smith (Catton Grove Ward), Trevor Smith (Mousehold Ward).

In Peterborough Marcus Davies will stand for East Ward. This is the first time that a legalise cannabis candidate has contested a Peterborough seat.

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance, a single but very broad issue party, fields candidates with policies on other important local, national and international issues. They are united under the umbrella policy of the LCA - "Legalise and Utilise Cannabis". The issue concerns: Health and Medicine, Human Rights, The Environment, Law and Order, Drugs, Pollution and Transport, Education, Employment, Agriculture, Trade, Religion and the Welfare of Society. The LCA has published a Manifesto and Information Document "Cannabis: Legalise and Utilise" ISBN 0 9535693 06

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance was registered as an official UK political party in March 1999. The official emblems include the cannabis leaf. Alun Buffry is the nominating officer and Hugh Robertson is Treasurer.

In 1999, November, Colin Paisley, ex-Labour Mayor of Carlisle, contested the Kensington and Chelsea by-election against Michael Portillo. In 1999, 5 LCA candidates stood in Norwich wards. In 1998, Danny Tungate was the first legalise cannabis candidate to stand in Norwich local elections. In 1997, Howard Marks stood on the single issue of Legalise Cannabis in both Norwich North and Norwich South - it was during that election campaign that Home Office Minister Charles Clarke, MP for Norwich South,
admitted his previous use of cannabis and accused Mr Marks of trying to "disrupt" the democratic process.
