Elections must be given a lot more exposure Alun Buffry Letters, Evening News, Norwich Monday 20 Mar 2000 While pleased that alternative and additional methods of voting are to be tried in Norwich in this year's local elections, it may take more than that to cause a substantial increase in the number of electors who cast their votes. It has been disappointingly small for some time now, suggesting that the current councillors do not reflect the desires of the electorate. One option has been missing from the ballot papers of the past, and will no doubt be missing from those of the future (electronic or otherwise) - "none of these". The only way that people have been able to express that opinion has been through not voting. The number of non-voters may be a signal of the lack of suitable candidates and a general disinterest in elections. Unfortunately, there are other causes of not voting too During last year's run-up to the elections, I saw very little in the local press or on TV. There were a couple of sections on candidates' views on selected issues, in the Evening News, but the election was hardly presented as an important or exciting occasion. Maybe if more space was given to the election and to the airing the candidates' views, the electorate would find a candidate worth voting for, one who would represent them rather than just their party. Also, it would be good to learn more about our prospective representatives and not just the opinions of one party or another. Alun Buffry Legalise Cannabis Alliance
