LCA to stand in Romsey, Hampshire LCA LCA Press Release Thursday 06 Apr 2000 The Legalise Cannabis Alliance are pleased to announce that we have selected Derrick Large from a shortlist of prospective candidates to contest the forthcoming by-election in Romsey, Hampshire. Mr Large, said: "The qualification I offer to the cannabis debate, is 20 years experience of its use for medical purposes." "I lived for two years in a normal Dutch town, Tilburg. A town where cannabis has become normalised, even boring. Anyone researching the Dutch system of control should really make Tilburg their first port of call, as it's much more relevant to the average British town than Amsterdam, and has successfully integrated cannabis use into its culture." "After many years of growing my own supply, during which I learnt a great deal about the cannabis plant, I acquired a criminal record for cultivation. Since my convictions, I have devoted myself to becoming IT literate and have continued studying the cannabis plant and its role in our society." "Cannabis culture has arrived in Britain, and is now an integral part of our society, which won't disappear, despite, or because of, legal sanctions." "The Government are continuing to ignore the cannabis issue, so I have decided to stand in the forthcoming Romsey by-election as the Prospective Candidate for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance. With my many years of "inside" experience, I hope to bring a measure of dispassionate, pragmatic realism to the cannabis debate." Notes for Editors: Derrick Large is 40 years of age and was born and raised in Chandlers Ford. A pipefitter by trade, he spent many years working at Fawley Oil Refinery. He is currently studying computer networking for the MCSE certificate. During the years he lived in the Netherlands, he met his long time partner, Irma. Since returning from Holland they have been settled in the Kings Somborne area for the past 10 years. Living in the locality for most of his life, Derrick feel he has a good insight to the concerns and issues that affect the Romsey constituency. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) was registered as a UK political party in March 1999. The cannabis leaf, one of the party emblems, will appear on ballot papers. The LCA does not run a membership. We prefer to seek endorsements to our principles, Aims and Proposals from across the political divide and feel that membership would exclude members of other political parties because of the rules of many such parties. Our endorsees include Doctors, Solicitors and many businessmen. The LCA contested 5 seats in the local elections in Norwich in 1999, receiving much support and many votes. In November 1999, Colin Paisley, ex-Labour Party mayor of Carlisle, contested the Kensington and Chelsea by-election, coming eighth out of the eighteen candidates with 141 votes. Howard Marks was the first legalise cannabis candidate in the general election in 1997, contesting four constituencies: Norwich North, Norwich South, Southampton and Neath. It was during the election hustings in Norwich that the now Home Office minister Charles Clarke confessed his use of cannabis.
