Cannabis candidate beaten but buoyant
Nelson Leader, Lancashire Thursday 11 May 2000 A FORMER Nelson man who is campaigning to legalise cannabis was beaten at the polls at local elections but said he is pleased with the amount of support he has received. Father-of-two Marcus Davies (31) is an epileptic who used to suffer three convulsions every day until a doctor recommended using cannabis more than a decade ago. Now, the former Fisher-More High School pupil, who now lives in Peterborough, has had only three convulsions in that time and wants to see the drug legalised. He decided to run for local election after his mother, Margaret, died of cancer in March. He said she suffered with her medication, but the pain was greatly relieved by using cannabis. He was not elected, but said he received 5.7 per cent of the vote and a lot of well wishes. He said: "I have met so many people who could be helped by cannabis and many were on my side, but some were not eligible to vote." Mr Davies was also relieved to be told by his landlady that after careful negotiation he and his family are free to stay at their rented home, after originally being given two months notice to leave. He said: "I explained my reasons for taking cannabis and campaigning to legalise the drug, and they soon realised I was not some drug-crazed idiot and said it was fine for me and my family to stay where we are." Local MP Gordon Prentice is predicting that the medical use of cannabis will be given the go-ahead soon by the Government. The MP has been a long-time campaigner to return the drug to the medicine chest.
