Cannabis party to hold first conference in city
Evening News, Norwich Wednesday 16 Feb 2000 CANNABIS campaigners from around the country will converge on Norwich for the first party conference of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) next month. They will meet at Wensum Lodge on Saturday, March 4, for the conference, described in promotional leaflets as "historic". The aim will be to plan the Norwich-based group's strategy for the next few years and discuss how it will tackle future local and general elections. Colin Paisley, of the LCA, who stood against Michael Portillo in the Kensington and Chelsea by-election last November, will be a star speaker. Norwich LCA supporter Jack Girling, who stood for Mancroft ward in last year's local elections, said more than 100 LCA supporters had already signed up to attend and more were expected. "Norwich does seem to be the home of tech movement," he said. "It has been going here since the sixties. Norwich has always been a place for radical movements like the Elizabeth Fry prison reform campaign." Mr Girling said he hoped the Norwich conference would signal the beginning of the end for the criminal status of cannabis. Norfolk police said it was the group's democratic right to debate the issue. Acting Assistant Chief Constable Colin Lanka-Fitt said: "This organisation has the right to campaign for a change to the law through democratic means." The LCA fielded five candidates in the 1999 local elections who polled a total of 302 votes.
