Legalise weed Alun Buffry Letters, Oldham Evening Chronicle Monday 13 Nov 2000 Your reader "Sick of Waiting "wrote that (s)he would not vote "for any candidate that will not commit themselves to ending the unjustified charade of cannabis prohibition" ("Cannabis shame", November 8). Neither this governement nor the last have listened to the popular polls or the experts who have reported on cannabis. Ministers offer lame reasons for the continued criminalisation of cannabis users including those in dire need of the plant as a medicine. True, trials on cannabinoid extracts are being conducted with the aim of producing effectively delivered doses on prescription to selected patients, putting the supply into the hands of the pharmaceutical companies seemingly favoured by government. We are, after all talking about a plant - once a common weed in England - that can be grown eaisly and cheaply at home, and one that has been described by experts such as Professor Grinspoon of Harvard Medical School as "remarkably safe". To deny a medicine to sick and dying people is a crime against humanity. To do so knowing that it is effective - as has been known for thousands of years - is tantamount to manslaughter. To suggest that cannabis is illegal for reasons of health, or because some users later take hard drugs, is more of an excuse than a reason. Labour have even discounted a Royal Commission on the issue saying that should the report recommend legalisation, they would not even then listen. Well, I suppose we could call that some form of honesty. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance was formed as a registered political party in the UK in 1999. The purpose is force the debate into the political agenda and make it an elecation issue. We will consider supporting any person who wishes to stand on our principles, aims and proposals as expressed in our publication Cannabis: Legalise and Utilse (ISBN 09535693 1 4) as their main policy. A Legalise Cannabis Alliance candidate in the next election in Oldham will give the people a chance to send a very clear message to the next government - we are fed up with seeing people dragged through the courts for a so- called crime that has no victims.
