Letter: Taxing cannabis

Hugh Robertson

Electronic Telegraph

Sunday 18 Oct 1998

A recent report has found cannabis to be the fourth largest cash crop in America - despite prohibition. It is the largest cash crop in 10 states, including California and Hawaii.

If cannabis was legal, it would be subject to taxation. It would obviously be a significant source of income - as opposed to the enormous current drain on the public purse that is obviously wasted in the 'war on drugs'. The savings and the new income could be used to help in the treatment and rehabilitation of heroin addicts.

With that amount of money available there need be no shortage of places on schemes. The current situation is a disgrace. It is time for governments to face the facts - prohibition is an expensive failure, look at some alternatives.
