Cannabis Man Joins Election Campaign
Peterborough Herald & Post Wednesday 29 Mar 2000 Father-of-two Marcus Davies has used cannabis for more than a decade to treat his severe epilespy. But he admits: "It's quite a radical idea for Peterborough." He said: "Medication used to make me sit in a chair and dribble from the corner of my mouth. "Can you imagine spending two months just sitting in a chair, not being able to get to the toilet? That's no life, you need to live your life. "In the last ten years I have had just three convulsions, I used to have three convulsions every day." Mr Davies was spurred on after his mother gave him her blessing. He said: "My mother died two weeks ago from cancer. Although my mother was anti-drugs all her life, the last week of her life, the pain and suffering, was relieved by cannabis. "I am not really expecting to win this election but the votes I get could have gone to the other parties. This will show them and other people how important it is." Mr Davies will be going head to head with current East Ward Labour councillor Chris Edwards, who said: "The single issue candidates tend to be very good at highlighting their issues but they don't tend to be successful. "I support the government's stance however, I do have great sympathy for people who are using it for pain relief." Even council leader, Cllr Neville Sanders is backing Mr Davies' fight for council even if he doesn't completely share his views. Cllr Sanders said: "I wish him the best of luck. Politics is about people who really want to change the world for what they believe is for the better." Last year, between April 99 and January 2000, 34kg of cannabis resin was seized in Peterborough, the same time the year before the figure was less than 3kg. Acting chief inspector, detective Paul Phillipson said: "As far as the police are concerned we will continue to uphold the law, if the law changes we will change our stance."
