Cannabis Candidate Told To Quit Home
Peterborough Evening Telegraph Tuesday 11 Apr 2000 CANNABIS candidate Marcus Davies today told how he feared he had lost his family's Peterborough home because of his political beliefs. Mr Davies, who is standing for East Ward in the city council elections on May 4 on a ticket of legalising the drug, has been given two months notice to quit his three-bedroom house in Briar Way. The landlord's property agent, Dakings, say the decision has nothing to do with Mr Davies's drugs stance. But the candidate, who has rented the house for his wife and three children for two years, claims it is too much of a coincidence. The notice from the property agent arrivednine days after The Evening Telegraph reported how Mr Davies admitted that he smokes cannabis to ease his epilepsy. Mr Davies said: "The notice requires us to leave our home as my landlord finds she requires to occupy the property herself. The agent says any connection with my political actions is purely coincidental, but I don't believe that politics and coincidence can co-exist." Mr Davies has chosen to reveal his plight on election material he has delivered to residents' homes in East ward. But Paul Kotowski, an agent for Dakings, based in Broadway, Peterborough, said: "My client simply wishes to re-occupy her property. "Mr Davies asked if he was being evicted because of his beliefs. I hadn't got the foggiest what his campaign was about and I'm pretty sure my client does not either." Douglas Sanders, of Sanders and Co, the landlord's former agent, said: "By law Mr Davies could be contravening the tenancy agreement, as it does say no drugs are allowed on the premises." The landlord was unavailable for comment.
