Cannabis man fined 200 pounds
Evening News, Norwich Tuesday 08 Aug 2000 Wheel-chair-bound John Crome, of Randolf Road (Norwich) pleaded guilty at Norwich magistrates court yesterday to cultivating and possessing cannabis plants. He said he used the drug to control the pain brought on by pancreatitis and the skin disease Rothman Thompson syndrome, which stops him from sweating. Richard Paterson, prosecuting, said police armed with a search warrant searched his house on June 24. While searching his home they discovered 16 cannabis plants, worth a total of pounds2,580. "When Mr Crome was interviewed about the cannabis plants, he admitted they were his and for his own use", said Mr Paterson. James Landles, in mitigation for Crome (39) said the cannabis was used for pain relief on top of his prescribed medication. "For these two conditions he takes 50 - 60 different types of pills a day, so you can see these conditions he suffers from are very extreme and very rare," he said. "Because he cannot sweat he cannot stay in direct sunlight or in a hot room for long periods. "And he cannot get too cold, so he has horrendous gas and electricity bills." Magistrates fined Crome pounds150 for the cultivation of the cannabis plants and pounds50 for possessing them. They also ordered him to pay pounds20 towards the cost of the case and ordered that the plants be destroyed.
