Wednesday 03 May 2000 I do not use cannabis because I do not enjoy it. But that is my personal choice. So why do I want it legalised? Cannabis was once one of the most widely used plants in the world. It was used medicinally, recreationally and religiously. It is also one of the most efficacious plants for a whole variety of purposes from making paper to building houses (Terry Waite lives in a hemp house in Bury St Edmunds), from plastic to fuel. It can be used to feed and clothe the world. It offers a means of the improvement of many of the environmental problems. Prohibition must stop. Our civil rights are being abused, whether we use cannabis or not. Did you know that: There is a 'receptor' in our brains specific to THC-like molecules. THC is one of the main active ingredients in cannabis? Over 100,000 people are arrested for cannabis each year in the UK; this number is still rising? Families are torn apart when one member is locked up or alienated? It costs the taxpayer BILLIONS of pounds each year so that we can punish our neighbours for quietly smoking cannabis in their own homes? If cannabis is banned to prevent us from choosing to use a natural and safe plant that we can grow in our gardens, I must question our ability to make any decisions in our lives. Is that what the Government believes of the people? I am 22-years-old and currently studying alternative health and Shiatsu. I am interested in what motivates people and wish to meet people from all walks of life and very concerned for the health of the mind, body, spirit and the environment. If elected I would devote my influence to improving all of these, to help people reach their true potentials. As well as continually moving for the legalisation and utilisation of cannabis, I would campaign on the council: to provide more recycling facilities to encourage the use of bicycles in order to decrease the problems caused by excess traffic and improve the safety of our streets for children to use more hemp products to replace synthetic ones. to try to bring about a community feeling and increased contact with nature through the creation of more green areas and parks. to ensure public money is spent wisely by the authorities and to provide more avenues of communication with all members of our society.
