Phil Lockwood Election Communication
Wednesday 06 Jun 2001 My name is Phil Lockwood and I am your Legalise Cannabis Alliance candidate for the Calder Valley in the forthcoming general election. In February this year, I was convicted of cultivating cannabis for my own consumption, at Bradford Crown Court. I received 1 years probation for this offence and I am appealing against my conviction under the Human Rights Act 1998, legislation adopted by this country in October last year. (Article 8(1) & 8(2) of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms) My cultivation and use of cannabis was an informed choice. I knew that unlike alcohol or tobacco it had a negligible to non-existent potential to cause me harm, (since records began not one single death has been attributed to cannabis.), I also knew that it could benefit my health by reducing stress and its associated bedfellows such as depression and high blood pressure, without the many side effects of many prescription drugs, something my own experience of cannabis use allows me to endorse. As I researched further, I discovered cannabis's medicinal uses in the treatment of sickness and nausea caused by chemotherapy, in the treatment of severe pain and the treatment of multiple sclerosis. I also learned about the many other uses of cannabis, or the hemp plant to give it one of its other names - how cannabis seeds are a nutritious food source that could help feed the starving - how cannabis strong durable fibres can be used to weave excellent quality hard wearing cloth, sails for boats and spun into top quality ropes used by climbers and emergency services alike. I learned how cannabis could be used to manufacture paper instead of the rapidly depleting timber forests, cheaply and without the use of many polluting chemicals and how cannabis is capable of cleaning the air, producing much needed oxygen, a factor that can help reduce global warming. How biodegradable plastics, oil and gas that can be used for fuel and pressed timber products that can be use in building construction can be manufactured from? Yes the Hemp Plant or Cannabis. Nowhere, despite looking hard and un-blinkered can I find any coherent argument against the legalisation of cannabis and believe, knowing the facts, that no right minded person would either. If you know the facts and truth of this matter, I ask you to give me your vote. It will count by telling the establishment that there is a large part of the electorate that want the matter addressing. If you don't know the facts and truth, can I ask you to do a little research? Then any views you have regarding the issue of cannabis will at least be informed views, not uninformed criticism. I do not condone breaking the law but neither do I condone draconian laws that turn people in to criminals for cultivating or possessing a herb, for thats what cannabis is, that offers so much to society without harming anyone. HOW CAN THERE BE A CRIME WITHOUT A VICTIM ? Help me to make cannabis legal therefore freeing up police and court time to catch true criminals, people who do damage to society instead of persecuting otherwise law abiding citizens for doing something harmless to themselves and others with a beneficial herb, in their own home. Vote for common sense, vote for legalise cannabis, VOTE FOR LOCKWOOD ! Phil Lockwood
