Maybe the cannabis issue affects you because you use it and live in fear of
being caught by the police. Or do you suffer from a health problem that could
be improved by legal cannabis?

Maybe you feel the cannabis issue does not affect you because you would never
use it and none of your friends or relatives do. Keeping cannabis illegal
wastes taxpayers money on police, courts and prisons. That money could be
spent on protecting the public.

I have lived in South Edinburgh for 30 years and am a member of the Scottish
Green Party, Vice Chair of the Southside Community Council and work in a
Secondary School.

Nobody really knows why cannabis became illegal since it had been used for
thousands of years without causing problems. Official bodies that look into
the issue tell the government to reduce the penalties for cannabis, but the UK
government will not listen.

Cannabis is certainly not as harmful as alcohol and tobacco which kill
thousands of people every year.

I knew lots of people at university who used cannabis and the worst thing that
happened to them was that some became tobacco addicts. I was lucky to travel
in India, see cannabis growing there like a weed and used by the local people
for aches and pains or instead of alcohol. And their animals ate it too!

What worries me is that while cannabis is illegal it is not grown, imported or
sold in conditions suitable for human consumption, yet thousands of people use
it every week.

Since I suffer from asthma I do not want to smoke cannabis but having a legal
supply to eat would be a dream come true.

Belgium and Switzerland are the latest countries in Europe to allow possession
and consumption of small amounts of cannabis. The Netherlands, Italy, Spain,
and Portugal already allow cannabis use. France and Germany plan to reduce
cannabis penalties. Yet Prime Minister Tony Blair says he will not legalise
cannabis even if a Royal Commission recommends changing the law.

election.
