Wednesday 06 Jun 2001 Cannabis is one of the broadest issues in the political spectrum and its legalisation will improve the lives of every human being. By any rational test the war on drugs is a costly failure. Even more worrying, in the face of this political and social disaster, is the silence offered by the leaders of the major political parties. One has only to look around the neighbourhood to see the devastating effects that cannabis prohibition has had on society and the environment - and it effects all of us in many ways, most of which we are unaware. We all know somebody who uses Cannabis, even if we are unaware, and it is widely accepted amongst the British public. An estimated 5 million people use it in the UK. Several MP's including cabinet ministers have admitted to using it and a recent Mori poll said 70% of the public want it legalised. The Government acknowledges that the vast majority of all crime is directly caused by prohibition yet blatantly refuses all dialogue. With the problems of crime and drugs damage rising decade on decade and year on year, it doesn't make sense does it? Regardless of how many billions we waste and of how much social devastation is caused, the Government are not prepared to even consider a change in the law. They prefer instead to pursue a policy of prosecuting the innocent and, even worse, the sick. Tony Blair said, that even if a Royal Commission recommended that cannabis should be legalised, a Labour government will not change the law. This concerns me greatly. Around the world, billions of people are becoming increasingly impoverished, millions dying from malnutrition whilst millions more are denied their right to effective medicine. 80% of the net 'worth' of every human being goes to the energy corporations - the people who own the oil, pharmaceutical, brewing and tobacco companies. Super-rich industrialists get even richer. There is no such thing as the war on drugs - it is a war on people and people are the victims. Cannabis prohibition is a crime against humanity. How would legalisation affect you? Millions testify to the medicinal powers of cannabis and it could replace hundreds of dangerous, profit-driven pharmaceutical products. This alone would free up huge resources for the NHS, improving the lives of millions and reducing death (legal pharmaceutical products kill more people than all illegal drugs combined). It will enable further research and investment into the beneficial uses of the plant to provide us with cheap medicine, fuel, fibre and paper. It will help reduce damage through drug misuse, crime and unnecessary pollution. It would help feed the world (the seed being one of the most nutritious on earth).
