Wednesday 06 Jun 2001 I am asking you to vote for me as a Legalise Cannabis Alliance candidate to send a message to the next Government that the law banning cannabis is both ineffective and wrong. LEGALISING CANNABIS IS NOT ABOUT ENCOURAGING DRUG USE. It is about recognising the truth of the problem and offering a sensible and workable alternative to the failed policy of prohibition. It is about freedom, health, education, the environment, law and order, fuel, pollution, agriculture, industry, trade... It is an issue that should concern us all! CANNABIS IS NOT A SINGLE ISSUE. It is an issue of health, freedom, education, law and order, the environment, fuel, pollution, agriculture, industry, trade and employment. It is an issue that effects us all, or will one day. It is an issue that will effect our children and their children and future generations. Cannabis, also known as hemp, is not new to this country. It was used for centuries to produce paper, canvas, rope, clothes and much more. Stronger and more durable than cotton, its cultivation does not need the fertilisers and pesticides need by cotton plantations. Cannabis was used as an effective medicine throughout much of the world for centuries. Culpeper listed it in his book on medicinal herbs in the 17th century. Today many people still grow cannabis to ease their ailments but unfortunately they are often treated as criminals, arrested and even fined or imprisoned. I feel very strongly that is very wrong and must be halted immediately. The social use of cannabis was also well known for hundreds of years. Many followers of the world's religions have used cannabis as a sacrament. Many others have used cannabis as a relaxant or for inspiration. That continues today, but users are also often arrested, fined and even imprisoned. I feel very strongly that is very wrong and must be halted immediately. Millions of people in Britain have tried cannabis to no ill. The number of people who have claimed to be harmed is a tiny fraction of users, but that is no reason to punish anyone at all. Yet over the last thirty years over 1 million people, the sick included, have been arrested and convicted of so- called crimes that had no victims. The cost of has been BILLIONS of pounds. I feel very strongly that is very wrong and must be halted immediately. The law has left the supply in the hands of unqualified and often greedy dealers who may also sell addictive and dangerous drugs. The lack of good quality control or addition of profit-boosting additives can turn a beneficial herb into a deadly poison. Instead of the dealers being taxed, people are forced to pay taxes in an ever-failing attempt to catch them. I feel very strongly that is very wrong and must be halted immediately. This ban on cannabis certainly does far more harm than good. It punishes people instead of protecting them and favours big industry over people by preventing sufficient research into the many acclaimed beneficial uses of the plant. The invasion of people's privacy at home, prevention of access to a beneficial and therapeutic plant, unnecessary control of choice of life style and religion, are acts against Human Rights. I feel very strongly that is very wrong and must be halted immediately. If elected, I would be happy to do my utmost to represent the constituency on all matters and work to bring an end to an unjust law. If you have questions about cannabis, legalisation or other matters, please give me a ring. Use your vote effectively! VOTE FOR Alun Buffry
