Review of First Party Conference

Saturday 04 Mar 2000 Personally, I was very pleased at how things went. A good crowd turned up from all parts of the country to see the speakers and enjoy a day or, in some cases, a whole weekend of socialising and discussion. Alun Buffry, our Nominating Officer, was first to speak. He explained how important it was for people to stand in elections in order to make cannabis legalisation a major issue. He was followed by Steve Pank who talked about the Misuse of Drugs Act and cannabis. Mark Gibson explained why he decided to run in the next general election in Penrith and Borders constituency and why other people should also take a stand. Mark was followed by Don Barnard who talked on the implications of urine- testing for cannabis and how it has been shown to be a waste of time as no study has ever shown it to be effective in increasing productivity or safety in the workplace. Buster Nolan, who has previously stood for election to parliament in Essex, gave his views on why he stood and why people should stand for the LCA. He was followed by Colin Paisley, our candidate in the Kensington and Chelsea By-election in November, 1999 who talked about his experiences in that by-election and encouraged more people to do likewise. The conference was rounded off by Howard Marks who gave a very well-received talk. He made many excellent points on several aspects of the legalisation issue. All in all, it was a very encouraging day. I'm looking forward to the next one already. Not quite as much as I'm looking forward to legalisation, though!
