Police "consider enforcing law" at cannabis party
Ananova
Sunday 02 Sep 2001 Essex police says it may enforce the law if supporters of legalising cannabis hold a planned "Smokey Bear" party. The party is set to take place on September 8, in Central Park, Chelmsford and has been advertised on the internet. Its anonymous organisers claim the party will test official reaction to the public smoking of cannabis. The Essex Chronicle says parties have been held in Portsmouth, Hull and Norwich in the past. Don Barnard, a Braintree campaigner for the legalisation of cannabis, says people smoked the drug as a tongue-in-cheek protest against the law. "They come from all over the country to sit and make their point and to see what the police will do about it," he said. "It's the nearest cannabis smokers come to direct confrontation." An Essex Police spokesman told Ananova: "Police can be expected to make arrests if there is evidence of the supply or possession of an illegal drug."
