The research found that many firms have no policies for dealing with staff suffering from drink or drug problems. The union organisation is urging companies to raise awareness among staff and draw up plans to deal with workers who need help. According to the TUC, workers will feel more confident about approaching their employer if they know they will be helped rather than disciplined. Recent studies have suggested that drink and drug related problems are one of the commonest causes of sickness absence. TUC general secretary John Monks, commented: "Alcohol and drug misuse is a growing problem, which has the potential to rob people not only of their health, but their jobs, self-respect, families and friends. "The introduction of a comprehensive, planned drug and alcohol policy covering the whole of the workforce can have significant benefits for employers, employees with a problem, as well as for their colleagues." ********************************************************* >From Yahoo News 23.12.01 http://uk.news.yahoo.com/011223/143/cmet8.html Home Office to lead change in drugs strategy The government appears set to shift its policy on drugs in order to focus on the treatment of addicts. The move will bring the UK into line with the Netherlands, where there is a softer approach to drug use. Ministers are shortly expected to announce plans which would see heroin addicts receiving their drugs on prescription and remove laws which make it illegal to grow cannabis for personal use. The new approach is being masterminded by the Home Office minister, Bob Ainsworth, who trailed the move in parliament last week. The new package will also change the law to decriminalise growing cannabis at home for personal consumption. The government last week told the science and technology committee that it no longer believed that people should be prosecuted for growing small amounts of the drug. A spokesman for the Home Office denied that the new approach represented a u-turn, saying it was simply an extension of the home secretary's wider rethink of drugs policy. ********************************************************* If you require further information or clarification on any cannabis related issues, please feel free to ask. If we don't know the answer - we probably know somebody who does. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
