British Pharmaceutical Students Association Conference
THC4MS Conference Review
Monday 25 Feb 2002 23 February 2002 THC4MS sent a representative to John Moores University Liverpool to address the British Pharmaceutical Students Association conference. Delegates present were from Manchester, Nottingham, Bradford and Liverpool Universities. The THC4MS representative explained how cannabis chocolate was being sent to patients across the UK and Europe free of charge. When a bar of cannabis-chocolate was shown, the audience responded with a round of applause. There were no objections to a bar being passed around the audience, taking care not to allow anyone to touch the chocolate so as not to implicate them in breaking the law. THC4MS openly supplied Patman with the bar of cann-choc which brought another round of applause! The talk lasted 1 hour 10 min and overshot allocated time leaving no time for questions. Jeff Ditch field explained how his cannabis cafe in Rhyl will help medi-users and pledged help with THC4MS Lunch:- and the realisation that disabled toilet facilities are inadequate The organisers stated it was the highest attendance ever for any lecture/conference previously organised. Dr Ian Wong senior Lecturer in pharmacy practice talked about his work with GW pharmaceuticals compiling findings. He explained how THC and CBD are being extracted from a stabilized variety of cannabis, it is extracted via CO2 same as the process to remove caffeine from coffee! He referred to THC4MS work several times and asked for confirmation of time it takes for orally taken cannabis chocolate to take effect and several other points. Sublingual spray 50/50 thc/cbd. The spray has a microchip to record dose, times and amount taken for accurate research. It also has a PIN code lock to satisfy the Home Office and licensing boards. Dr Wong talked about the ethics of advising a patient to break the law. He stated that it was a doctor's job to advise a patient to practice self-help. THC4MS spoke to Dr Wong and let him know that supplies of chocolate have been sent to an ex-trial patient who much preferred the results. Dr Wong is seeking permission from the Medical Ethics Board to analyse THC4ms' findings and hopes to be in touch soon. Dr Wong is moving jobs in 1 month and will be carrying out research at the Great Ormand St Hospital. He is most interested in palatable medicines for children. Touretts syndrome and grand mall epilepsy were mentioned, Summary The fact we are being invited to such a high-profile conference shows we are being taken seriously. We would not have believed 6 months ago that we could talk so openly about our activities without immediate arrest.
