3rd Annual Conference

Alun Buffry

Conference Review

Saturday 06 Apr 2002

---

All,

I think most who attended the event would agree it was an educational and
enjoyable day, attended by many front-line activists from as far afield as
Northern Scotland and Cornwall. Some excellent and to-the point speeches
and superb debates.

Many thanks to all the speakers: Chris Baldwin, Don Barnard, Mark Gibson,
Linda Hendry, Phil Lockwood, James McCleavy, Steve Pank, John Peacock,
Lyndon Pugh, Ingo Wagenknecht and everyone else who contributed in any way.

Sad, though, that nobody from London came to represent the May Day march
and festival.

I am sorry that everyone else was not able to attend. Now you'll just have
to wait until someone types in a fuller report and to next year to attend
the only dedicated cannabis-legalisation conference in the UK!

I think one of the main conclusions was that there remains even more need
for a truly active alliance such as the LCA to continue pushing beyond the
complacency of imminent reclassification to the only ultimate sensible
solution - full legalisation of cannabis.

It was also made abundantly clear that the LCA, like the other UK cannabis
groups, cannot continue to function - in fact we are severely restricted by
the lack of - funds.

The LCA has posted a free copy of the manifesto to every Tory MP and more
recently every Lib Dem MP (several months before their conference) and we
believe that had a major effect. Few Labour MP's have yet to benefit from
a free copy. It costs about £2.50 per MP. We need about £700 to send the
last 300 or so. Can you help?

That money and other money, we hope, will come from donors who value the
LCA's work enough to send us the monetary equivalent (or more) of two
and a half cigarettes or a quarter of a pint of beer per week on a
regular basis. That's just 50 pence a week, just 2 pounds a month. This
can be done using standard order forms available on request, postage
stamps or cheques or postal orders. Beyond that we are asking serious
campaigners to approach their friends to do the same, and / or organise
collections, raffles or fund-raising events.

My spirits were raised.

Alun
