We Congratulate The Lib Dems And Invite Them To Join Us
Don Barnard Press Release
Monday 11 Mar 2002 The Legalise Cannabis Alliance would like to congratulate the Liberal Democrat's Party Conference for passing the motion to adopt a policy of pushing for the full legalisation of cannabis. We invite them to join us in our now mutual aims. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) became a political party in 1999 in order to give voice to the millions of people who were calling for the legalisation of cannabis. During the last three years we have contested parliamentary elections and by-elections, local council and County Council elections, across the country. The presence of LCA candidates in those elections enabled us to raise what we consider to be an extremely important topic, air our views and talk to the other candidates. Alun Buffry, National Coordinator of the LCA, said: "We have mailed many MP's, including almost all of the Lib Dems, with a free copy of our publication: "Cannabis: Legalise and Utilise" (ISBN 0- 9535693-1-4). We hope that they have read some of the evidence about cannabis use and the history of its prohibition, and maybe come to realise the injustice of the present law. "The failure of the law to reduce both use of cannabis and harm from impurities necessitates a change in policy or withdrawal from the international drugs treaties that demand such results. If prohibition has failed here, and decriminalisation elsewhere, it is time we tried legalisation. It is apparent that the law itself causes the greater harm." The Legalise Cannabis Alliance, being an umbrella party for everyone calling for legalisation irrespective of membership of other parties, invites every Liberal Democrat MP, counsellor and future candidate to endorse our Principles, Aims and Proposals - it is not necessary or even possible to join the LCA, we do not run a membership.
