Costs the Public Severely (CPS) demands Mediweed champion is locked up.

Don Barnard

Press Release

Sunday 30 Jun 2002

---

Last week Manchester's Senior Magistrate, ruled that Colin Davis -
Mediweed champion and pioneer of UK coffeeshops - had been unlawfully
arrested and detained by Stockport Police. However, while Colin was
getting ready to be released from custody, Wendy Logan of the
"Stockport Cannabis Prohibition Service" (CPS) had other ideas:

Despite, TWICE in one week being denied a remand in custody by the Stockport
Magistrates. She was determined - in the publics interest - to see
Stockport's Public Enemy No.1 locked up

Wendy and her heartless bosses mercilessly challenged the magistrate ruling
to release Colin and the Magistrate was "forced" to remand Colin again on a
point of law.

Don Barnard, Legalise Cannabis Alliance, said: "The LCA fails to see
how it is "Best Practice" to waste 1 million [plus] of tax payers money
[See 1] - Money, that would be better spent prosecuting criminals,
educating our children and harm reduction strategies thus improving
everyone's quality of life.

"The Prime Minister' stated in parliament on July 3rd ..[See 2] "he
sincerely hoped that cases such as these would be dealt with in a
sympathetic manner and that full consideration of the circumstances
should take place before any action was taken

"it is at the discretion of the Chief Constable how he priorities crimes
(spend resources). And the local Councillors and other statutory bodies
are accountable to the public how these resources are spent. It's time
The Chief Constable and Stockport's [Colin Persecution Service] were
called to account - Just, What is the motive behind this heartless
expensive fiasco?

Colin's case will now probably be heard by a Judge in Chambers on
Tuesday morning, July 9th.

NOTE * THIS IS THE DAY PRIOR TO THE ANTICIPATED ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE HOME
SECRETARY TO RECLASSIFY CANNABIS TO SAVE POLICE TIME AND RESOURCES?

I hope you can give this an airing.

When cannabis campaigners set out to get themselves arrested they wanted to
highlight what they consider to be the ludicrous and draconian nature of
Britain's drugs laws.

They did the job admirably. The prosecution of 29 cannabis campaigners, who
were caught in possession of as little as 31 worth of the drug, is likely
to cost a staggering 1m. The final bill may be even higher. Among those
charged are two Euro MPs.

The remarkable campaign follows a series of raids on Britain's first
Amsterdam-style cannabis caf, which opened last year in Stockport, Greater
Manchester. The caf, the Dutch Experience, remains open for business but
the arrest of its founder, Colin Davies, prompted a series of mass protests
outside Stockport magistrates court and the town's police station.

2: On 3rd July The Prime Minister was asked in questions to comment on the
prosecution in Scotland of a medicinal user Biz Ivol [See 3] who grew her
own cannabis to alleviate MS symptoms. And supplied cannabis chocolate
[FREE] to fellow sufferers.

NOTE: Like Colins Coffeeshop cannabis chocolate supply still goes on [See 4]

The PM stated that he understood that individuals may take that route but
that he must wait until the results of the research going on into the
subject.

In the meantime he made it clear that any prosecutions would not be a matter
for the government but for the authorities.

He paused and added that he sincerely hoped that cases such as these would
be dealt with in a sympathetic manner and that full consideration of the
circumstances should take place before any action was taken.
