Elderly Father of Jailed Cannabis Campaigner Arrested for Allegedly Lying to Protect Son
Nol van Schaik Press Release
Sunday 28 Jul 2002 Stockport, Greater Manchester, UK Colin Davies Sr, 71, father of jailed cannabis campaigner Colin Davies was arrested early this morning at his home. He was taken to Stockport Police Station, and was led in front of the Stockport Magistrates late in the afternoon. He was charged with "intent of perverting the cause of Justice" and "making false statements when sworn in". These allegedly false statements were made regarding his son's having been to his own home in violation of the unusual terms of his bail. The younger Davies, cofounder of The Dutch Experience in Stockport, the UK's first cannabis cafe, is being held in Strangeways prison on remand. He is a disabled medical cannabis user who has twice been acquitted by juries on charges of supplying cannabis to other patients. The arrest of his father is seen as a further escalation of the unprecedented harshness in the police attacks on the activists associated with The Dutch Experience. Knowledgeable observers said that an arrest on such a charge was extremely unusual. Davies Sr. was arrested by PC Chapman, who previously arrested Colin Jr. and Dutch national Bart Meekel. Meerkel was arrested on July 1st, and is being held without bail after being charged with possession of cannabis with intent to supply, simply for being in the flat of Colin Davies, Jr. PC Chapman is a former South-African police officer, who seems to have decided that Apartheid applies to cannabis users and their family and friends. Perhaps because of his age, Davies Sr. was released on unconditional bail, but he has to appear in Crown Court on August 22, 2002.
