Cannabis market stall plan
Richard Edwards This is York
Thursday 01 Aug 2002 MARIJUANA legalisation campaigner Carl Wagner is still searching York for a premises to open a cannabis café - and says he is looking into starting off with a stall in Newgate Market. Unlike any café, Mr Wagner says there would be no cannabis available at the market stall. Instead, like his stall at Hull market, it would stock a wide range of cannabis-related goods and accessories - all of which are legal. He said: "I am very keen indeed to come to York, and getting onto the market would be a good way to start. "While it was there I could keep looking for somewhere suitable to get this café open." In May, the Evening Press reported how Mr Wagner had looked at a possible premises in Gillygate to open the café. He said: "I met with a business owner from Gillygate last week but, unfortunately, what they were asking for the place was a bit steep. "I know that is likely to be the case in York, and I am not ruling that premises out, but I want to see what, if anything, is available elsewhere in the city before making any decisions." The café would hold a register of York residents with medical conditions that would benefit from cannabis use. "They could then get it safely and without fear of it being polluted. If local law enforcement allowed, cannabis could then be sold to recreational users," Mr Wagner added. City of York Council has already said that unless there was any change in the law it would oppose a cannabis café. A council spokeswoman said that any market stall application from Mr Wagner should be made to the markets office. "It would be dealt with like any other application," she said. Adam Sinclair, of York Chamber of Trade, has said "well-presented and sophisticated businesses" of any kind are welcome in York, as long as they stay within the law. Detective Inspector Ian Wills, of the North Yorkshire Police drug squad, has said the police would decide what to do about any café as and when it is necessary. The Dutch Experience cannabis café is currently trading in Stockport, Greater Manchester
