________________________________________________________________________
Chris Davies MEP Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for
the North West of England due in court on cannabis possession charges.
[See editors note below]
____________________________________________________________________

You may be tempted to criticised Chris in your commentary or in the
columns. I would ask please use this as an opportunity to advance the
public debate on cannabis as well!

Any contributions which counter the simplistic 'all drugs are bad' approach
have got to be of help to get some rational into the arguments and will be
appreciated.

Editors notes:

NEXT MONDAY OCTOBER 28 - Chris Davies MEP (Liberal Democrat Member of the
European Parliament for the North West of England) is expecting to be found
guilty at Manchester Crown Court of possession of cannabis, an offence under
the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act.

Chris Davies said: " I shall be making clear that my holding up a small
quantity of cannabis on
the back of a postage stamp in December last year was a political act in
support of a drugs policy which seeks to separate soft and hard drugs as has
been advanced in Holland through its 800+ cannabis coffee shops.

"The facts are plain to see the average age of a heroin addict in Holland is
40 and rising, whereas in Britain it is 21 and falling, may illustrate the
success of this approach.

2} LCA Comment:

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance spokes person said: "The LCA applauds Chris
Davies stance to offer himself up for a criminal record. And, I am sure a
lot of critics from his peers, if only more politician and others who are
frightened of being seen as pro-drugs or losing their job would do the same
as Chris.

"We cannot understand Manchester CPS proceeding with these cases,
especially after dropping charges against 20 other offenders including
two former LCA candidates - Chris Baldwin and Phil Lockwood.

"I dread to think what the total cost to the tax payer these case will be!

"Let's not forget Colin Davies - currently in jail for 3 years
relatively minor cannabis offences. "Neither should we forget all the
trauma suffered by Colin's family whilst he is in jail leading an
unproductive life for relatively minor cannabis offences
