What is the truth about cannabis?

Don Barnard

Press Release

Friday 22 Nov 2002

---

Don Barnard, Press Officer of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, said: "I am
sure it is not entirely co-incidental that we have seen a flurry of
research documents alleging various harms associated with cannabis shortly
before the Home Secretary is due to make his proposal to reclassify
cannabis to Class C and amend the law for disposal of cannabis possession
offences.

"I would have thought that with the imminent announcement of the Government
Green Paper on Disposal of Cannabis Offences, Members of Parliament should
be swatting up and inviting comments on this issue from the experts so they
know what they are talking about when it is debated in parliament next year.

"The Legalise Cannabis Alliance has already sent a free copy of our
publication "Cannabis: legalise and Utilise" to almost every MP, although
some were returned without identification. We have also testified before
the Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into UK Government Drugs Policy and
Decriminalisation. More recently, the Conservative Party have approached
us for our view on their proposed policy to deal with youth crime."

To assist your audience to make up their own minds on the evidence
available, much of the old research and new evidence [that is a review of
the old research] is posted on the UK Cannabis Internet Activists (UKCIA)
at www.ukcia.org [See links to latest Eds. notes].

Don Barnard said: "These sites go beyond government leaks and
misinformation hyped by chat show host's. Both are essential sourcing for
parents, teachers, doctors, students, environmentalist, employer, trade
union and MP's.

"DAT's and other statutory authorities should refer to them in their drug
education. Correct information has been known to change minds!

"The basic question I would like the Government to answer:
WHY, doesn't the government tell the people who use cannabis [albeit
illegally] how to reduce the
possible harms resulting from smoking cannabis? It is contained on these
sites?

"Surely, this fits in with government 10-Year Strategy to tackle substance
misuse?
