10,000 Sign Online Cannabis Petition

Saturday 07 Dec 2002 Over 10,000 people, including MP's doctors and academics, have signed the on-line Legalise Cannabis Now petition at http://www.ethical-business.com/petitions.asp?pet_id=34 and the number is growing rapidly. The cannabis petition if the largest of many on site, including local national and international. The petition calls upon the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, to remove "cannabis from the Misuse of Drugs Act and other prohibitive legislation - and an immediate halt to the prosecution of people for the possession, cultivation and supply of cannabis subject only to the necessary restrictions needed to ensure quality and cleanliness of supply." So far there has been no response from the Government. Alun Buffry, National Coordinator of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, said: "The petition was slow to start with, maybe because many people were reluctant to add their name so publicly, although addresses and contact details are not disclosed. "However, it seems that the more people who have signed, the more people are willing to sign, and growth is accelerating. "It will continue to grow until the Government gives people the respect and protection they deserve, whether we use the plant or not. It is a petition against the punishment of the users." The stated desired outcome of the petition is "To free cannabis from prohibition thus enabling its full utilisation for all beneficial uses and research - for medicine, relaxant, fuel, fibre food. This would lead to the solution of many of the major serious problems facing the world today - drug addiction, expensive medication, hunger, pollution and poverty. It would put the control of essential resources into the hands of local communities rather than multinational industrial corporations."
