Campaigner Urges Essex MP's Support For Cannabis

Essex Enquirer

Wednesday 25 Jun 2003

---

LOCAL PEOPLE are being urged to help multiple sclerosis sufferer Biz Ivol
who used cannabis for medicinal purposes.

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance has set up an online petition calling for an
investigation into her plight.

And Don Barnard, a Chelmsford spokesperson for the party, threatened to
name and shame Essex MPs who fail to lend their support.

Biz 56, from Orkney, is confined to a wheelchair, and faces charges of
possessing and supplying cannabis, which she says eases her suffering.

The charges relate to cannabis-laced chocolates which she has allegedly
made and distributed to fellow sufferers across the UK.

She has waited two years for her case to be heard on 2 July and her health
has suffered terribly in that time. The quality of her life is now so bad
she says she no longer wants to live.

Mr Barnard said: "This is not about legalising cannabis, scoring points or
towing the party political line

"It is about justice, compassion and fair play and should be of interest to
everyone - regardless of religion, race or political allegiances."

Eric Pickles, MP for Brentwood and Ongar told The Enquirer 'I would have
more respect for this campaigner if he'd had the courtesy to send me a
letter before he started issuing threats.

"I'm certainly not in a position to know all the facts and I'm not going to
second judge the courts

"But what really sticks in my craw is pressure groups exploiting situations
for their own purposes.

Bob Russell, MP for Colchester said he would not start "Importing
constituents however worthy cause".

But Christopher Jackman, a Tory councillor in Wickford who signed the
petition, said he was proud to support "courageous" Biz.

And Lawrence Wood, the chief executive of the MS Resource Centre in Essex,
said: "l am fully aware of the good work that Cannachoc (a cannabis
chocolate product) is doing and the hypocrisy of a system that allows
people to drink bleach to see if it helps, but denies them a proven treatment
