The Five Live Report, "High Employment" on drug testing in the workplace is
to be broadcast at 11am Sunday 24 August.

To be followed by a pre-recorded special documentary report at 7.30pm in
the evening.

3.3(1) Government has been introducing drug and alcohol screen test by
stealth with little or no attention being taken of this draconian measure.
Lest you think we exaggerate.

".in a dramatic policy shift, Keith Hellawell, the drugs czar, and
government ministers have started encouraging drug testing by employers.
They are following a quiet revolution, largely unreported because firms have
been scared of bad publicity.

"Although, the drug testing is a civil liberties minefield, the health and
Safety Executive is quietly encouraging business to act, ..." "The
Government will doubtless look at the United States for a lead, where random
screening is common place."

3.4 Drug testing advocates claim that illegal drug use costs companies
billions in accidents, lost productivity and absenteeism - yet they produce
no real evidence in support of this!

3.5 Drug tests in the workplace have little to do with health and safety and
a lot to do with controlling workers and propping up the Government's ailing
anti-drug war. They are often violations of civil liberties. What right does
an employer have to control out-of-work activities when they don't affect
work?
