Don't attack Mr Wagner, have the guts to attack his beliefs

Alexander Donis

Letters, Hull Daily Mail

Wednesday 11 Feb 2004

---

Carol Young's criticism of Carl Wagner (Mail, February 4) fails to take into
account certain fundamental points.

When Carl Wagner voices his opinion on cannabis laws he does so not only as a
cannabis user but also to promote the alternative uses which would benefit
everyone in society.

The law is unjust and it will remain unjust as long as people like Carol Young
refuse to credit Mr Wagner with the privilege of free speech.

Wanting to suppress Mr Wagner's messages does not escape anyone from the facts
which he attempts to convey.

There is ample evidence to suggest cannabis should be legal.

Carol Young's belief that an unjust law should be accepted rather than
protested against is based on what argument?

It was probably a person who shared a similar dislike for Mr Wagner's opinions
who made the false allegations in an "anonymous" phone call which resulted in
his arrest.

It would be much more constructive to read someone's justifications for
criminalising pot smokers, and for someone to explain why we should not be
allowed the benefits of its non-narcotic variety, hemp.

Rather than attack Mr Wagner personally why can't someone have the guts to
attack his beliefs?

If what he says and does is so wrong then surely someone can state what is
wrong about it.

Alexander Donis,
Hinderwell Street,
Hull.
