Cannabis candidate to stand at election
Louie Hadley Chronicle and Echo, Northants
Thursday 20 Nov 2003 Political party wanting drug legalised to contest town seat A political party which supports the legalisation of cannabis will field a candidate in Northampton at the next general election. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) is putting forward 23-year-old Michael Mullaney to stand for the Northampton North seat currently held by Labour MP Sally Keeble. Mr Mullaney, of Westfield Road, Wellingborough, has previously stood as a Labour candidate for Wellingborough Council and says he is particularly concerned with freedom issues. He told the Chronicle & Echo: 'I first became involved with the Legalise Cannabis Alliance after visiting their website and finding I agreed with their views on legalisation. I don't use cannabis myself, but I believe individuals should be allowed to consume a relatively harmless substance if that's what they wish. 'I was previously a member of the Labour Party, but became disillusioned when it became obvious that it was more interested in power than policies. Mr Mullaney, who studied politics at University College Northampton, will stand as an independent under the banner of the LCA and a cannabis leaf-logo will appear alongside his name on the ballot paper. He said: 'If elected to the House of Commons I will continue the long tradition of having an independent minded voice representing Northampton in Parliament.' The LCA is preparing to enter a total of 150 candidates nationwide at the next general election, even though the Government will have downgraded cannabis to a class C drug by the end of next year. In the 2001 General Election it fielded 13 candidates, but until now it has never stood for election in the Midlands. Don Barnard, spokesman for the LCA, said: 'As far as our candidates go, Michael is one of the best, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see him in Parliament one day. 'We're saying that by all means warn people of the dangers of cannabis but don't send us to prison for using it.'
