European parliament approves Catania drugs report
Don Barnard Press Release
Thursday 16 Dec 2004 PRESS RELEASE - No embargo Yesterday the European parliament approved the Catania report on some drugs..... The Catania report, which calls for a fundamental change of course in European drug policy, was approved in the plenary session of the European parliament with a tiny majority (285 against 271 votes). Some amendments were made to the version that was approved in Committee of Ciivil Liberties on 2 december (see the ENCOD site for more details), but in general, it has the same tone, affirming among others: - EU drug strategy in the past has been a failure - Harm and damage reduction needs to be the core element of drug policies - More research into the positive use of cannabis, coca and opium - More and more concrete involvement of civil society organisations NOTE: European Council of Ministers will have to adopt this strategy on Friday 17 December. They probably will not take into account the Catania report. We think they must? "Time for accountability"!...."Can we please get on with what needs doing, namely - Seek a better way founded in: common sense, science, compassion, health and human rights?"....... I invite you to bring on the debate to involve all the main players. 14 Dec 2004 release can be found here http://www.lca-uk.org/displayitem.php?articleid=1075 Abstracts: I wish someone would tell me - What will it take to get government and politicians of all political persuasion to have transparent consultation with the public! I invite you to bring on the debate?
