Press bulletin - Cannabis Psychosis, Hype And Baloney

Those who want the law strengthened have made much of the recent flurry of
reports alleging to show a causal link between cannabis and mental health
problems. [1]

The BBC In it's cover of Fergusson, Horwood & Ridder report purporting to
show a causal link between cannabis (Marijuana) use and psychosis. ("Tests
of causal linkages between cannabis use and psychotic symptoms". journal
Addiction Volume 100 Issue 3 Page 354 March 2005 ). ---- The BBC reported:
"Drug Doubles Mental Health Risk" .

This definitive-sounding headlines was picked up by The worldwide press,
chat show host, local media, And used as a political tool by politicians who
want cannabis returned to Class B.

Is there any real new evidence to support these claims! Or, Is it Hype And
Baloney?

Bruce Mirken and Mitch Earleywine in "Psychosis, Hype And Baloney (AlterNet.
March 7, 2005) have taken a close look at "Tests of causal linkages between
cannabis use and psychotic symptoms"

Their conclusion there gaping holes unmentioned in those definitive-sounding
headlines in the original reporting by BBC.

2] On Saturday, 29th January 2005, the first anniversary of
reclassification, the two mental health charities, RETHINK and SANE went on
a media offensive to highlight the issue of mental health and cannabis use.
The stated aim was to call for an education campaign, but SANE used the
event to call for a reversal of reclassification. [2]
The UKCIA is carrying an open letter to Marjorie Wallace, the chief
executive of SANE, one of the mental health charities.

This is written by Helen who is the parent of a young man who has
schizophrenia. These are Helen's words, not UKCIA's.
