Cannabis the solution to tax problems!

Don Barnard

Press Release

Sunday 10 Apr 2005

---

"Cannabis is much more than just a drug, it's a solution!" Says The Legalise
cannabis Alliance.

The Labour and Tory parties are once again arguing over sums of money that
are inconceivable to most of us: billions of pounds a year. They both wish
to be able to pledge lower taxes and they both wish to pledge better
services, but
neither party is able to do both because of their lack of foresight.

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance has the partial answer, according to Alun
Buffry, the National Coordinator of the party that will be contesting about
two dozen seats in the forthcoming elections.

"Each year, whether Labour or Conservative, they spend more and more
BILLIONS of pounds of taxpayers money chasing and prosecuting people for
growing or possessing the cannabis plant.

"Most of that money achieves little or nothing; it seldom persuades users to
stop, alienates the youth and leaves them vulnerable to bad quality, bad
drugs and bad information, ruins careers and lives and can even lead to
prison. Yet
the Government tell us that some 5 million people use cannabis - over 10% of
the adult population.

"What good does it do threatening to criminalise all those people at such a
huge cost, when by and large they do no harm?

"That money could be better spent on health and education.

"But cannabis offers even more to people: as well as being a potentially
beneficial home-grown medicine to many people, the waste could be used to
produce locally-produced, cheaper and environmentally friendly fuels for our
cars and homes, saving us all a tidy sum of money and the some of the
environmental costs now apparent.

"But there's still more: by allowing the opening of private cannabis clubs
or Dutch-style "Coffeeshops", where profits can be taxed, extra revenue
could be gained by the Government instead staying outside the system. And
if that
revenue went on a local level, it would go some way to cancelling the
Council Tax for the elderly.

"Cannabis is much more than just a drug: it's a solution!"
